A Day of Laughter, Connection, and Sibling Bonding at Camp Catch-Up’s Winter Carnival

Two young siblings giggle as a bright red balloon bounces between them. “Don’t let it touch the ground!” one shouts excitedly. With a playful smirk, the older sibling taps the balloon in the air, challenging the younger to keep it afloat. Wide-eyed and determined, the younger one scrambles, jumping just in time to graze the balloon with his fingertips and keep the game alive. Their laughter blends seamlessly into the joyful energy filling the room.

Welcome to Camp Catch-Up’s Winter Carnival

Camp Catch-Up brings siblings (ages 9-19) together. These campers have been separated through foster care placements and are reunited for fun-filled days of activities and reconnection. Camps occur throughout the summer with special seasonal events, such as the Winter Carnival. These efforts are to maintain, strengthen, and sometimes repair their sibling relationships.

A Warm Welcome

From the moment campers arrive, the air buzzes with excitement. Music fills the room, mingling with laughter and animated conversations. Each sibling group is paired with a dedicated carnival crew member, many of whom have been campers in their younger years, ensuring a seamless experience throughout the day.

“Camp Catch-Up gives siblings hope during a time of uncertainty. For many, this is one the happiest time of their lives—a chance to simply be together with their siblings and find joy,” shares Camp Catch-Up Director Mona Tarin. “It’s important to keep these connections strong, not just for today.”

A Carnival of Fun

Campers feel the warmth from Camp Director, Mona Tarin who has special relationships with each camper.

At the heart of the Winter Carnival are activities that cater to every interest. From skill games like dart throwing and Skee-Ball to classic attractions such as bean bag toss and mini basketball, the carnival encourages teamwork and playfulness. For those who love creativity, the art station and face painting provide endless opportunities for self-expression. And no carnival would be complete without a cakewalk!

One of the highlights of the day is the gift-giving station. Each sibling picks out a special gift for their brother or sister, carefully selecting something meaningful. They exchange these gifts in a heartfelt moment of togetherness, sitting in a circle opening one gift at a time. Each gift carefully selected from one sibling to another. This activity mirrors the joyous spirit of holiday giving and creates a touching moment of closeness and shared connection among siblings.

The memories of the day are preserved in photos and Polaroids, capturing their time together. And as a lasting keepsake, a family photo serves as a tangible reminder of the love, joy, and connection shared on this special day.

Fueling the Fun

Volunteers serve up a carnival-style feast—corn dogs, nachos, hot dogs, and fresh fruit—bringing siblings together around the table to share stories and refuel for more adventures. The day isn’t just about games; it’s about creating a space where siblings can relax, connect, and enjoy being together.

More Than Just Games

The second half of the day brings even more opportunities for bonding. Face painting transforms campers into superheroes and butterflies, while board games and an art station provide a chance for calm, focused interaction. A special Web of Connection activity reinforces the importance of sibling bonds, allowing campers to express what their relationships mean to them.

Thanks to an unusually warm January afternoon, many of the sibling groups venture outside, exploring the playground and trails of Platte River State Park. The fresh air and open space add another layer of adventure as siblings chase each other, climb, and simply enjoy being together.

“For many of our sibling groups, Camp Catch Up is the only chance they have to see each other all year,” shares Tarin. “Some may never return to their original family unit, making it even more vital to preserve their bond. Camp Catch Up provides a space to maintain their family identity and strengthen their relationships. When siblings lose connection, it can have a lasting impact.”

Gratitude and Lasting Impact

Camp Catch Up wouldn’t be possible without its dedicated supporters and volunteers. From monetary donations to organizing activities to providing emotional support, they foster lasting connections and ensure every camper feels welcome and free just be a kid.

“We have amazing volunteers and supporters,” shares Tarin. ‘Their dedication makes camp what it is.”

Camp Catch-Up would also like to thank Platte River State Park for providing the perfect setting.

A Day of Belonging

As the carnival games close, campers depart with tired feet, warm hearts, and—thanks to the wildly popular lollipop ring toss—plenty of blue lips. Laughter lingers in the air as balloons of all sizes still float through the room, a reminder of the joy that filled the day. The games weren’t about competition but shared joy, laughter, and connection. An ordinary balloon became a tool for rekindling sibling bonds. A simple photograph became a cherished memory. And for the campers of Camp Catch-Up, this wasn’t just a day of fun—it was a day of belonging, love, and siblings.

Until Next Time, Camp Catch-Up ❤️
