Meet a Sixpence Family
Sixpence delivers three times the fun and thriving on behalf of child development. Please don’t take our word for it, though. Just ask Andrea Monroy, the mom of triplets Axel, Daniel, and Ximena.
As a Sixpence participant, Andrea reaps many benefits. A Nebraska Children and Families Foundation Early Childhood initiative, Sixpence works with families to help their infants and toddlers developmentally thrive.

We base Sixpence’s work on the science of brain development. During the first three years of a child’s life, they develop a complex and essential neural framework. Throughout this time, the level of developmental engagement they receive can set them up for success for the rest of their lives.
As a Sixpence participant, Andrea and her triplets experienced many positive outcomes from Sixpence home visits. Home visits make up an integral part of Sixpence and allow parents to work alongside highly skilled experts. These early childhood professionals detect, assess, and support children through any developmental hurdles. The home visitor then helps parents to address challenges their children may have by creating high-quality, developmentally-stimulating experiences for their children.
Parents are, after all, their children’s first, most important teachers. The home visitor can help parents set their children up for kindergarten readiness and cultivate themselves as a role model for resiliency.
Andrea started working with Sixpence home visitor Vanesa Munoz two months before her triplets were due. The triplets are now 20 months (about one-and-a-half years) old.
Sixpence: Singing a Song Since 2006
Before we jump into Andrea’s Sixpence experience, we’d like to tell you how this initiative came together.
Back in 2006, the public and private sectors partnered to create Sixpence’s early childhood endowment. The initiative may have changed over the years, but the song has stayed the same. Sixpence aims to converge funds, leverage resources, and pool talent to create long-term, quality early childhood programs.
Let’s visit with Andrea and hear about how Sixpence helps her, and her children thrive!
What are the benefits of taking part in a Sixpence program for children, parents, and communities?
One of the benefits for my children is that Sixpence helps support and develop their gross and fine motor abilities and communication, which encourages them [to] pronounce and learn new words to communicate.

Sixpence generally helps children prepare [for] life with agility, balance, and better movement coordination. For parents, Sixpence is a great program for their children because they will develop different abilities, which will help them in the long run and become much more confident and gain high self-esteem. This program also greatly impacts the community because it allows children to become social and motivated with high self-esteem when doing the home visiting activities as well as other activities done in and outside of the home.
How has Sixpence affected your life?
Sixpence has had a huge impact on my life because we have discovered and learned about many resources and allowed my children to explore other realities and develop sensitivity against perceptions. Having my children learn different skills and strengths through experiences with activities is what I have seen happen with the help of this program.
Sixpence has also favored autonomy and security within our family, as well as an increased ability of creativity and imagination in my children. As a parent, Sixpence has helped me create stronger ties with my children and with society.
What are some of Sixpence’s quantitative and qualitative benefits for families or employees?
Sixpence’s Ages and Stages questionnaires and evaluations benefit us tremendously as parents because we learn and appreciate the development of our children. Through assessments and questionnaires, we can notice the qualities and abilities that each one of them has, as well as identify new goals to be established. More than anything, Sixpence keeps us aware of developmental milestones that are important for our children. The program also helps us advocate for our children’s kindergarten readiness!
