The Communities Together Can program in Columbus was developed to serve the high number of working families in the central Nebraska community. At first, the primary need it served was child care – a safe, structured and supervised place for children to go after school until their parents were done working.
And while it does still serve that purpose, the Columbus program has become a model for out-of-school arts education. Not only to participants in the program get homework help, a snack, and access to a host of fun educational activities, but the also have the unique opportunity to participate in an annual musical and the Broadway Experience.
These performing arts intensives teach young people to sing, sight-read music, put on a play, memorize lines and so much more. It’s an exciting chance to be center stage while learning valuable life skills.
