During the annual Changemakers celebration, Nebraska Children and Families Foundation awarded the 2024 Grace Abbott Award to the Peter Kiewit Foundation. This honor recognizes the foundation’s significant investment in the growth and future of Nebraska’s children. The award celebrates the legacy of Grace Abbott, a true Nebraska changemaker.
Honoring Grace Abbott’s Legacy
The Grace Abbott Award honors Nebraska’s legacy of social progress. Born in Grand Island in 1878, Grace Abbott was a pioneering social worker, who dedicated her life to advocating for women, immigrants, and children. Her influence extended internationally, representing the United States in the League of Nations and contributing to the 1935 Social Security Act under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This award celebrates her enduring legacy of courage and advocacy.
Peter Kiewit Foundation: A Pillar of Support for Nebraska’s Youth
This year, the Peter Kiewit Foundation was chosen to receive the Grace Abbott Award, highlighting the foundation’s remarkable efforts since its establishment in 1979. Founded on Peter Kiewit’s belief that Nebraska is the best place to live, the foundation has been instrumental in fostering college access and success, youth development, economic growth, and community capacity. These focus areas align with the mission of Nebraska Children and Families Foundation, reinforcing their partnership in creating opportunities and enhancing the well-being of children and families across the state.
A Shared Vision for Expanding Opportunities
Wendy Boyer, Executive Director, and Pat Thraen, Community Investment Officer, of the Peter Kiewit Foundation accepted the award on behalf of the Kiewit Foundation. Boyer emphasized the foundations’ shared commitment of expanding out-of-school programs in underserved Nebraska communities.
“One of our goals is to improve access to quality youth programs statewide. Through our partnership with Nebraska Children and Families Foundation and Beyond School Bells, we are building sustainable support systems, quality STEM curriculum, and career development opportunities that empower Nebraska’s youth”
Wendy Boyer, Peter Kiewit Foundation
The Peter Kiewit Foundation’s dedication to enhancing access and opportunities for Nebraska’s youth embodies the spirit of the Grace Abbott Award. By supporting initiatives that offer educational and developmental resources, the foundation ensures that all children have the chance to thrive. Their efforts foster individual growth and contribute to the state’s broader economic and social prosperity.
The Grace Abbott Award celebrates collaborative effort and a shared vision for a better Nebraska.
